At Home Skin Care Solutions

Using skin care products that are not suitable for your skin type can do more harm than good. They may leave rashes, make your skin extremely dry, or simply cause an irritation, adding onto your troubles. Hence, before you decide your skin care regimen, it is important that you determine what your skin type is?

What is your skin type?

To know what type of skin you have, wash your face with a cleanser that is not meant for any particular type of skin. Pat it dry and do the blotting test after an hour. Test your skin for its type when the weather changes.

Take a big tissue and blot your face with it. An oily T-zone represents a combination skin, oil all over the face means an oily skin, no oil at all means dry skin and less oil means normal skin. A sensitive skin feels irritated after washing.

Now that you know the type of skin that you have, you can decide the treatments that would best suit your skin. Although fad for cosmetics are on an all time high, still the essence of natural ingredients remain a treasure we can explore any time without having to worry about any harmful effects. Also, they are pretty cheap too.

Hence, this guide aims to provide you with many such natural solutions that would help you retain the youthful appeal of your skin and enhance its firmness and radiance for years to come.

Face Masks

Take 20 minutes off, twice a week, and pamper your face with homemade face masks. They are extremely beneficial for skin and also have the following benefits:

  • They remove dead cells from the surface of the skin and imparts radiance
  • They tighten the pores and give it porcelain like smoothness
  • These masks are also helpful in lightening blemishes from skin
  • They help in controlling acne
  • Some masks, like those made of egg whites give and instant face lift

Before applying any mask, it is important to know how and when the masks are to be used. Apply them when you are sure of remaining undisturbed for a few minutes.

The first step before applying any mask is to do a patch test behind your ear or the elbow to test if your skin is allergic to any product or ingredient.

Next, cleanse your face thoroughly using a gentle cleanser suited to your skin and rinse it with lukewarm water. Pat your skin dry. Steam your face for about 5 minutes. This will open up the pores of your skin and allow it to absorb moisture and let the mask penetrate deeply and work on your skin.

Now apply the mask with your fingertips. When the mask is of liquid consistency, such as those made of eggs, let the first layer dry before you apply a second layer. Remember not to move a single muscle of your face until you have removed it, as it can leave lines on your skin, doing more harm than good.

Leave the mask on your skin for about 15-20 minutes or till it dries. Gently remove it using cotton wool from the forehead to the chin. In case of clay mask, rinse your face with warm water and then with cold water.

On a wet face, gently massage the cleanser using circular motions in upward and outward direction. Wipe it off with cotton wool and wash it off with warm water. Use a clay-cleansing mask once a week, if you have an extremely oily skin.
  • Steam – After cleansing your face, steam it over a bowl of hot water or using a face steamer.
